چکیده

One key barrier to converting woody biomass to biofuel through the sugar platform is the low efficiency of enzymatic cellulose saccharification due to the strong recalcitrance of the crystalline cellulose. Significant past research efforts in cellulosic biofuels have focused on overcoming the recalcitrance of lignocelluloses to enhance the saccharification of the recalcitrant cellulose. However, in this work [1,2], we demonstrate the conversion of recalcitrant cellulose into cellulosic nanomaterials, which have attracted a great deal of attention recently due to their unique properties and remarkable strength. Significant levels of sugars can be readily hydrolyzed from wood pulp, leaving yields of cellulosic solid substrate of 60%–90%. The crystallinity index of the recalcitrant cellulose was found to be higher than that of the starting pulp, verifying that enzymatic hydrolysis occurs preferentially on amorphous cellulose. Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) were produced from the recalcitrant cellulose using various mechanical refining approaches, and the morphology of the CNFs varied drastically depending on the level and method of refining. Extensive hydrolysis and mechanical disintegration resulted in CNFs with morphology similar to cellulose nanocrystals, which are discrete rod-like nanoparticles of highly crystalline cellulose. CNF films created in this research show good mechanical properties and transparency, and their use as composite reinforcements is being investigated.

Integrated production of nano-fibrillated cellulose and cellulosic biofuel (ethanol) by enzymatic fractionation of wood fibers

This study demonstrates the feasibility of integrating the production of nano-fibrillated cellulose (NFC), a potentially highly valuable biomaterial, with sugar/biofuel (ethanol) from wood fibers. Commercial cellulase enzymes were used to fractionate the less recalcitrant amorphous cellulose from a bleached Kraft eucalyptus pulp, resulting in a highly crystalline and recalcitrant cellulose (RC)...

Engineering of a novel cellulose-adherent cellulolytic Saccharomyces cerevisiae for cellulosic biofuel production.

Cellulosic biofuel is the subject of increasing attention. The main obstacle toward its economic feasibility is the recalcitrance of lignocellulose requiring large amount of enzyme to break. Several engineered yeast strains have been developed with cellulolytic activities to reduce the need for enzyme addition, but exhibiting limited effect. Here, we report the successful engineering of a cellu...

Comparative Study of Cellulose Nanofibrils Disintegrated from Different Approaches

The use of renewable materials has received a great deal of attention over the last several decades due to the environmental impact and finite resources of petroleum and other non-renewable resources. Cellulose nanofibrils are a type of nanomaterial made from natural resources like wood and non-wood plants, and they are considering promising alternative to existing materials in numerous fields ...

CHALMERS Waste Textiles Bioprocessing to Ethanol and Biogas

In the world today, the need for sustainable processes is increasing. The work of the present thesis has been focused on conversion of the cellulosic part of waste textiles into biogas and ethanol, and its challenges. In 2009, the global annual fiber consumption exceeded 70 Mt, of which around 40% consisted of cellulosic material. This huge amount of fibers is processed into apparel, home texti...

Highly thermal-stable and functional cellulose nanocrystals and nanofibrils produced using fully recyclable organic acids

Here we report the production of highly thermal stable and functional cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and nanofibrils (CNF) by hydrolysis using concentrated organic acids. Due to their low water solubility, these solid organic acids can be easily recovered after hydrolysis reactions through crystallization at a lower or ambient temperature. When dicarboxylic acids were used, the resultant CNC surf...
